Museum funds store more than 50 000 pieces of rocks and minerals, and also fossil flora and fauna.

Second floor of Natural History museum is devoted to paleontology. First exhibits of this museum appeared in 1919. Later, in 1935, academician Pidoplichko, having systemized and having supplemented those materials, opened a separate paleontological exposition in Zoological museum. In museum halls more than 2000 exhibits are exposed, most of them were collected in Ukraine territory. Altogether about 1 million of exhibits are stored in Museums of Paleontology fund. Visitors of Museum show a special interest in reconstructed skeletons of fossil mammoths’ bones. Huge losses were incurred by Museum of Paleontology in January, 2006, when hot water flooded the halls of Museum of Paleontology and Geological Museum because of heater break. The point is that building heating facilities wasn’t changed and repaired fundamentally for 70 years. Invaluable unique exhibits were lost as a result. Giraffe skull, aged 7 million years, ancient deer skull and also rare collections of monographs were destroyed. Incident drew a wide response and UNESCO offered help to liquidate the consequences.
